Read one book cover to cover without leaving your seat
“By page fifty you'll itch to check your phone or stretch your legs. Push through that and the book takes over, and coming out the far side is genuinely strange.”
The Recipe
- Choose one book you can finish in a day, a novel rather than a doorstop; if you don't own one, the nearest library or second-hand shop will sort you in ten minutes.
- Find a place you can hold a seat for six hours without being moved on: a library, a big café that won't mind, a park in fair weather, your own kitchen if nothing else.
- Leave your phone in another room, or in a bag you have to stand up to reach.
- Start at the first page and read it straight through, no skimming, no skipping, no checking anything.
- Take short breaks for food and legs, but start nothing else in them.
- Read on past the point where you'd normally stop, into the part of the day where the book is the only thing that's happened.
- Finish the last page, then sit a minute before you pick your phone back up.
