Give a day to walking the shelter's dogs

“You turn up sure you'll be in the way of people who do this properly. By the third lead you are the thing a dog that waits all week was waiting for.”

The Recipe

  1. Ring the nearest animal shelter earlier in the week and ask to help walk dogs for a day.
  2. Get there for the morning, when the kennels are loudest and the walks have not started.
  3. Take whichever dog they hand you first, not the one you would have chosen.
  4. Walk each one the full round, and let the nervous ones set the pace.
  5. Eat your lunch where the staff eat theirs, and ask how a dog ends up here.
  6. Go back out for the afternoon dogs when your arms have already had enough.
  7. Sit with the one that is hardest to rehome for the last ten minutes before you go.
