Give a day to a work party fixing the land

“A day of unpaid digging for strangers sounds like a chore you would invent excuses to skip. By the afternoon there is a cleared path or a planted bank that was not there this morning, and your hands made part of it.”

The Recipe

  1. Find a conservation or path-clearing work party running this month and put your name down for the day.
  2. Get to the meeting point for the start, before the tools are handed out.
  3. Take the job nobody else grabbed, even if it is the dull one.
  4. Work through the first hour where your body wants to stop.
  5. Eat with the group at the break and ask what this place looked like before they started coming.
  6. Stay for the last stretch, when the light goes and the day's work becomes visible all at once.
  7. Walk the length of what you cleared or built before you leave.
