Give a day to the place your food comes from
“Standing in a field or a shed while someone works can feel like you are in the way. By the end you will never look at the finished thing on a shelf the same way.”
The Recipe
- Find a producer within a day's reach that takes visitors: a farm, a vineyard, an orchard, a dairy, a brewery, a mill.
- Ring ahead and get there for the start of the working day, not the middle of the afternoon.
- Take whatever tour or task they offer around the place.
- If they will let you do something with your hands, do it, however small.
- Ask the one question you actually want answered, not the one on the sign.
- Taste the thing at the source, fresher than it will ever be again.
- Buy a share of it to carry home, and note what it costs them to make.
- Walk some of the land it comes from before you leave.
- Eat or drink some of it that evening and set it beside the shop version in your cupboard.
