Walk a marathon on your own two feet in a day

“Around thirty kilometres your feet will make the case for stopping, and there is no medal and no crowd, only whether you said you would. That is the entire test.”

The Recipe

  1. Plan a route of roughly a marathon's distance that ends somewhere with transit home, a long line across and out of the city, not a loop.
  2. Eat properly and start early, carrying more food and water than a normal day out.
  3. Walk the first third well under the pace you feel like; you will want it back later.
  4. Deal with your feet at the first hint of trouble, not after, stopping to fix a hot spot the moment you feel one.
  5. Eat at the halfway mark whether or not you are hungry, sitting down properly for ten minutes.
  6. Push through the third quarter, where it stops being fun and the end is not yet close.
  7. Walk the last stretch at whatever pace your feet allow, counting down by landmarks, not distance.
  8. Reach the end, sit down before you do anything else, and take transit home.
