Learn a poem by heart

“It feels pointless and slow at first, and you will lose the third stanza again and again. Then one repetition it is simply there, and it stays for years.”

The Recipe

  1. Choose a poem you already half-like, from a book you own or the nearest library: long enough to be work, short enough to finish in an hour.
  2. Read it aloud whole, three or four times, before you try to hold any of it.
  3. Learn it a few lines at a time, always going back to the start, until you can say the whole thing with the page turned over.
