Find the oldest tree near you and work out its age

“You've walked past it a hundred times. Fifteen minutes in, you'll know it's older than the street it stands on.”

The Recipe

  1. Find the biggest, most weathered tree within walking distance: a park veteran, a churchyard yew, the one too big for the pavement it buckles.
  2. Reach around the trunk at chest height and pace out its girth, then measure it; for a tree grown in the open, roughly a centimetre of girth is a year of growth.
  3. Do the sum, and stand with the number a moment: what it already was, before any of this around it was here.
