Bind a cloth, dip it in indigo, and keep what comes out

“You tie it blind with no idea what the pattern will be, and it comes out of the vat a murky green you are sure is ruined; then it turns blue in the air while you hold it.”

The Recipe

  1. Book the next natural-dye or shibori session at the nearest studio that runs one; take the soonest.
  2. Fold and bind a plain cloth or shirt tight with string, bands or pegs, without planning the pattern.
  3. Lower it into the indigo vat, hold it under for the time you are told, and lift it out slowly.
  4. Let it turn from green to blue in the open air while you hold it.
  5. Rinse it, cut the bindings off, and keep it.
