Build a stool you will sit on for years in one day
“Your first cuts come out crooked and there is a moment mid-afternoon when it all looks like firewood. Push through the ugly middle and by evening it holds your weight, and it always will.”
The Recipe
- Get a simple three-legged stool plan and the timber cut to rough length: most timber yards will do the cutting if you bring the list.
- Clear a table or a floor with room to work, lay every tool and part out where you can see it, and read the whole plan before you touch a saw.
- Cut the three legs, checking each against the first and not against the plan: matching each other matters more than the number.
- Shape the seat and mark the leg holes, then dry-fit everything before any glue. This is where mistakes are still free.
- Drill the angled holes slowly, glue the legs, clamp or weight it, then walk away and let it be for the hour it needs.
- Once it is dry, level it by trimming the long leg a shaving at a time until it stops rocking.
- Sand it smooth, oil it, and sit on it hard to prove it holds.
