Build an instrument you can play by evening
“You will not believe the pile of parts in front of you at nine in the morning is going to make a sound. When it does, badly, in your own hands in the evening, you understand every instrument differently.”
The Recipe
- Book the nearest one-day instrument-making workshop: a cigar-box guitar, a dulcimer, a simple drum or whistle, whichever they run first.
- Spend the morning on the body, cutting and gluing under the maker's hands and clamping it to set.
- Fit the parts that make the sound (the strings and bridge, the skin, the holes) where fractions of a millimetre decide the pitch.
- Wait out the drying and setting time instead of rushing it.
- Learn to tune it, which is a skill in itself.
- Fix the one thing that is buzzing or dead once it is strung and tuned.
- Learn to play one simple thing on it before you leave.
- Take it home and play that one thing again to prove the morning was real.
