Carve a spoon from green wood
“You will be slow and clumsy with the knife and certain you will cut yourself. Green wood is soft and forgiving, and by the end you have a spoon that is yours.”
The Recipe
- Book the nearest green-woodworking or spoon-carving taster: a maker space, a craft school, whoever runs one first.
- Learn to hold the knife so every cut travels away from your body before you touch the wood.
- Rough out the shape from a split billet of green wood.
- Hollow the bowl with the hook knife, taking thin cuts rather than deep ones.
- Take the edges down until it sits right in your hand, and oil it before you leave.
