Climb the height of a mountain on one flight of stairs

“It is grim and repetitive by the fourth climb and your legs go before your will does. Then it lands that you are climbing a mountain in the middle of the city.”

The Recipe

  1. The night before, pick a real mountain and look up its height: a local peak, or one you have always meant to climb.
  2. Find the longest public staircase you can reach (a hillside stair, a tower open to the public, a stadium) and measure one flight's rise and step count.
  3. Work out how many times up equals your mountain's height, and write the number down.
  4. Get there early with water and food, and start.
  5. Go up, come down, and go up again, keeping a tally each time you reach the top.
  6. Eat and drink on the way down, not at the bottom, so you never fully stop.
  7. Take the last climb slowly and finish it even when the legs are gone.
  8. Sit at the top of the final ascent and work out what you would have seen from the real summit.
