Get into the cold water where the locals swim

“Every instinct will tell you not to put your body in water that cold, and the walk back to your clothes is the doubt talking: the people already in did it too, and the ten minutes afterwards are worth the ninety seconds of dread.”

The Recipe

  1. Ask where people swim in the sea, river or lake here (the spot locals use, the first one that fits, not the prettiest) and go.
  2. Get in slowly to your shoulders and keep breathing; do not gasp and rush it.
  3. Stay until your breath is steady, then get out before you go numb.
  4. Dry off fast and warm up by moving, not by standing still.
