Cut the tiles yourself and set a small mosaic

“Nipping tiles throws shards everywhere and the gaps look like mistakes the whole time you are placing them; then the grout goes in and the scatter reads as one picture.”

The Recipe

  1. Book a mosaic taster at the nearest studio or community workshop that runs one; take the first slot going.
  2. Nip the tiles into the pieces you need with the cutters, wearing the eye protection they hand you.
  3. Lay them onto a coaster-sized base with even gaps until the design is filled.
  4. Grout the gaps, wipe the surface clean, and take it home once it has set.
