Build a whole day out of what is happening in town today
“Turning up alone to a stranger's event is the hard part, three times over. But a day the city planned beats one you would have.”
The Recipe
- The night before, find the one place your city lists what is on (the library board, the council's what's-on, the local paper) and pick nothing yet.
- In the morning take the first free thing that starts before noon, not the best one.
- Go to it on your own and stay to the end, through the awkward middle.
- Between events walk to the next one rather than going home.
- Eat lunch at whatever the day has put in your path.
- Take one more thing you would never normally choose: a talk, a public meeting, a market, a service.
- Say one sentence to one person at each thing you go to.
- End at whatever is on latest, and come home from there.
