Find the oldest part of the city and read why it grew there
“The old quarter sounds like somewhere you drift through buying nothing. Go to read the streets instead of the shops and you can work out the reason the city is here at all.”
The Recipe
- Find the name of your city's oldest quarter or founding site and walk into it.
- Ignore the shopfronts and follow the narrowest, most crooked streets, which are usually the oldest.
- Find the single oldest building still standing and read whatever marks its date.
- Work out from the ground itself (a river, a crossing, a hill, a harbour) why the city started on this exact spot.
