Find where the city measures its distances from
“It sounds like a plaque you photograph and leave. But once you have stood on the exact zero and then walked a real kilometre out from it, every road sign in the city starts meaning something.”
The Recipe
- Find where your city marks kilometre zero (usually a plaque or a brass stud near the old centre or the main post office) and walk there rather than ride.
- Stand on the exact spot and read whatever is written on or around it.
- Pick any direction, and walk one kilometre out from the marker with the distance running on your phone.
- Stop where the kilometre ends and look back at how far into the city that actually took you.
