Stay in one forest from morning light to dusk

“By early afternoon you will be bored and ready to leave, and that boredom is exactly what most people never sit through. The forest changes after it.”

The Recipe

  1. Pick the nearest real forest you can reach: the one at the end of a train or bus line, not a park you already know.
  2. Get there early, while it is still cool and quiet.
  3. Walk in far enough that you cannot hear a road, then stop.
  4. Eat when you are hungry rather than at a set time, and carry out what you carry in.
  5. Spend the middle of the day going slowly: follow a stream, or a single kind of tree, or just the driest ground.
  6. Sit somewhere for a full hour without moving on. Let the wood get used to you.
  7. Walk a different way back than you came in by.
  8. Turn towards the edge in time to be walking out as the light goes gold, not after dark.
  9. Notice what the forest sounds like at dusk that it did not at noon.
