Interview a stranger about the work you couldn't do
“Asking for someone's time feels like an imposition, and your first question will come out clumsy. But most people are never once asked about what they do all day, and they do not want to stop.”
The Recipe
- Pick the first person you come across doing work you have always wondered about and could not do yourself.
- Wait until they are not busy, say you are new here and genuinely curious, and ask if they will give you ten minutes.
- Ask how they learned it and what most people get wrong about it.
- Ask them to show you one thing they do, rather than only describe it.
- Write down the one thing they said that you will still remember next week.
