Make a zine and put it into the world
“Making something and then physically handing it to strangers, or leaving it where they will find your name, is more exposing than it sounds when you start. By the end there are copies of a thing you made loose in the city.”
The Recipe
- In the morning, decide the one thing your zine is about: a street, an obsession, a list, a single day.
- Make it by hand on paper: write, draw, cut and paste it into eight pages folded from one sheet, or as many as you like.
- Do not tidy it into something respectable: a zine is meant to look made by one person.
- Take it to the nearest copy shop and print a small run, learning to fold and staple the first one right.
- Fold and staple the rest over a coffee.
- Put your copies into the world: a few in the free box of a bookshop or record shop, some handed to people, one kept.
- Write the date on the master copy before you file it.
