Book the observatory's public night and take your minute at the eyepiece
“You may queue in the cold for one minute at the glass, and cloud can cancel the whole thing. When the sky holds and it is your turn, you are looking at the actual light, not a screen.”
The Recipe
- Find a working observatory or a university physics department that runs public viewing nights: book the first clear date, not the best one.
- Turn up early, let your eyes adjust to the dark before you queue, and leave your phone in your pocket.
- Take your minute at the eyepiece, and ask the operator what you are actually looking at.
