Spend a day at a wheel making one bowl you would eat from
“Your first three pots will collapse and you will feel clumsy in a way you are not used to as an adult. The fourth one is the point.”
The Recipe
- Book the nearest pottery studio's next beginners' wheel session: whichever one has a spot, not the best-reviewed one.
- Arrive with clothes you do not mind ruining and nothing to prove.
- Spend the morning learning to centre the clay before you try to make anything; this is the part everyone wants to skip.
- Make your first bowl badly, then cut it in half to see how thick the walls really are.
- Throw the same bowl again and again through the middle of the day, keeping only the one you would actually eat from.
- Trim and finish that one pot in the afternoon and leave it to be fired.
- Walk home the long way with clay still under your nails.
