Paddle one stretch of water end to end

“Your arms give out an hour before you are done and the far bank never seems closer. Then the current takes your side and the last mile comes free.”

The Recipe

  1. Find the nearest paddling water with a hire point (a river, a canal, a sheltered stretch of coast) and book a sit-on-top kayak for the full day.
  2. Get there for the morning calm, when the wind is lowest, and take the safety brief even if you have paddled before.
  3. Pick a landmark downstream you can just make out, and make that your turnaround, not a distance, a thing you can point at.
  4. Paddle towards it without checking the time. Eat on the water when you are hungry, and pull in against the bank if you need to.
  5. At the landmark, get out, stand on ground no road reaches, and stay ten minutes before you turn.
  6. Paddle back with the wind behind you, and let the easy half be easy.
  7. Land, hand the boat back, and sit on the slip until your legs stop shaking.
