Learn to read a script you cannot read
“For the first half hour the letters are only shapes and you will doubt you can hold any of them. Then a sign you have walked past for weeks turns into a word, and it does not turn back.”
The Recipe
- Pick the writing system you see most often on signs where you live but cannot read: Arabic, Cyrillic, Korean, Greek, Thai, whichever is around you.
- Find a beginner's alphabet chart for it and learn the letters one by one, writing each a few times.
- Learn to write your own name in it.
- Take it to the street and sound out three signs you have walked past without reading.
