Stay for the tea after, not just the thing itself

“Slipping out at the end is the easy habit, and the tea afterwards is where the strangers are. Ten minutes of weak coffee is the whole point; the event was only the excuse to be in the room.”

The Recipe

  1. Go to any gathering that ends with tea, coffee or a mingle: a talk, a service, a class, a screening.
  2. Sit through the thing itself as usual.
  3. Then stay for the part everyone leaves before, and get a drink you do not want.
  4. Talk to two people before you let yourself go home.
