Spend a day in the archive finding the story of your own street

“An archive feels like somewhere you need a reason to be. You have one: you live on the street you are about to read.”

The Recipe

  1. Find the local-history archive, usually kept inside the central library, and check its opening hours the night before.
  2. Get there when it opens with your own address written down and nothing else planned.
  3. Ask the desk how to find your street, and let them show you the catalogue rather than guessing.
  4. Order the oldest map that shows your street and find your own building on it.
  5. Read forward in time through directories and photographs until you know who was there before you.
  6. Copy down one thing you could never have learned from the outside.
  7. Walk home the long way and stand in front of your building reading it differently.
