Strip a cast-off wooden thing back to bare wood
“Carrying someone's rubbish home past other people feels like a confession, and the sanding is dull, dusty work. Then the grain comes up under the oil and it looks like something you would buy.”
The Recipe
- Take the next sturdy wooden thing you find put out on the street, or buy the cheapest scuffed one in the nearest charity shop.
- Work it back to bare wood with coarse sandpaper, then again with fine, always going the way the grain runs.
- Wipe off the dust and rub in two thin coats of any wood oil or wax, letting the first dry before the second.
- Put it where you will use it every day.
