Take a beginners' judo class and learn to be thrown

“Being pulled off your feet by a stranger is the exact thing your body spends its whole life avoiding, so the first throw is pure panic. By the tenth you have learned to slap the mat and get straight back up, and the falling stops being the frightening part.”

The Recipe

  1. Find the nearest judo, wrestling or grappling club with a beginners' session and book the first one that fits, not the best one you can find.
  2. Say it is your first time, borrow a suit if they have one, and start with the breakfall drills before anything else.
  3. Let your partner throw you again and again, and throw them back when it is your turn.
