Write one line in a broad-nib hand
“Your first attempts look like a doctor's prescription and you will press far too hard. Once you let the nib's angle make the thick and thin for you, one line comes out you would frame.”
The Recipe
- Book a beginners' calligraphy or lettering session near you: italic, copperplate, whichever runs first.
- Learn to hold the nib at one fixed angle and let it make the thick and thin strokes for you.
- Practise the basic strokes, then write out one line you care about.
- Keep the best version and bin the rest.
