Walk a coast path between two towns and take the last bus back
“The middle third is where the views stop being new and your feet start to hurt, and you cannot easily quit halfway. That is the part you will remember.”
The Recipe
- Find a stretch of coast path that runs between two towns each with a bus or train back, and start from the far one so you are walking towards home.
- Check the tide before you go if any of it crosses a beach.
- Set off in the morning with more water than you think you need.
- Keep the sea on the same side the whole way and stop fighting the wind.
- Eat at the halfway point whether or not you have found somewhere nice: wherever you are is where you eat.
- Push through the middle stretch where it stops feeling new; do not check how far is left.
- Reach the second town with enough daylight to sit by the water before the bus.
- Take the last sensible bus back rather than the first: you earned the sitting.
