Give a day to cooking and eating with people who need it

“A whole day serving strangers sounds worthy and dull, and the counter between you and them feels safe. The day turns the moment you carry your own plate round to their side and sit down.”

The Recipe

  1. Find a community kitchen, shelter or meal service that will take a day of help, and book the whole day, not an hour.
  2. Get there for the start, when the food is still raw and the plan is being made.
  3. Take the prep nobody else wants and do it without being asked twice.
  4. Cook and serve straight through the busy middle of the day.
  5. When the queue thins, make yourself a plate and carry it round to eat with the people you served.
  6. Sit at their table rather than the crew's, and hear how one of them came to be there.
  7. Stay for the clean-down, which is when the crew actually talk.
  8. Ask what the place needs that money cannot buy, and write it down.
