Sit a monastery's day from an early office to the last

“Turning up on your own to a working monastery feels like trespassing on something not yours. Almost everywhere, the door is genuinely open, and the shape of the day does the rest.”

The Recipe

  1. Find a monastery, priory or abbey near you that keeps public services and welcomes quiet visitors; most do, and most list their daily offices online.
  2. Plan to be there for more than one office: an early one, something in the middle of the day, the evening one, with the long gaps in between.
  3. Arrive for the first, sit where visitors sit, and don't worry about knowing when to stand or what the words are.
  4. In the hours between, stay on; walk the grounds, sit in the empty church, keep the silence the place keeps.
  5. Bring your own food and eat it plainly, without your phone, the way the day is asking you to.
  6. Go back in for the middle office, and notice the day is being measured out in these, not in hours.
  7. Stay for the last office, when the light's going and the singing carries differently.
  8. Leave after it, and carry the shape of a day built entirely around stillness back out into your own.
