Watch a canal lock work one boat through
“Slow, and you'll wonder if anything's happening. Then a boat drops the height of a room in front of you and it makes sense.”
The Recipe
- Walk to the nearest lock on a canal or river, the one you cross without ever stopping.
- Wait for a boat and watch the whole cycle: the gates, the paddles opening, the water finding its level, the boat rising or sinking to meet the next stretch.
- If nothing comes in twenty minutes, read the lock cold instead: stand at the low gates, look up at the water held back above your head, and work out the order it all has to happen in.
