Host a picnic and fill it with strangers
“Laying out food for people who might not come is the most exposed thing in this app; you could sit in a park with too much bread and nobody. Someone stops, then someone else, and by the afternoon you are the reason a dozen strangers met.”
The Recipe
- Pick a spot in a park with foot traffic, and a date and a time this week.
- Spend the week inviting: a note on the community board, a line to the neighbours, a word to the people you meet, everyone welcome, bring nothing.
- In the morning, shop and make enough simple food to feed strangers, and pack a rug and spare cups.
- Get to the spot early and lay it all out so it plainly reads as an open invitation.
- Put up a sign that says what it is and that everyone is welcome.
- Wave in the first person who slows down, and feed them before you explain anything.
- Keep it going through the afternoon, introducing each new arrival to the ones already there.
- Step back once people are talking without you, and let it become theirs.
- Pack down with whoever stayed to help, and swap ways to keep in touch.
