Perform once at an open mic tonight
“You'll be scared all day and worst in the ten minutes before your name, and there's no version where that goes away. You do it scared or you don't do it.”
The Recipe
- Find the nearest open mic that takes walk-ons this week: music, comedy, poetry, whatever you have three minutes of.
- Decide this morning that you're going tonight, and don't leave yourself an exit.
- Spend the day getting one short piece ready: three minutes, done well, nothing longer.
- Get there early, put your name down first, and buy one drink, not four.
- Watch the acts before you and clap for the ones who are worse than they feared.
- Go up when they call you, say your name, and do the thing you prepared.
- Get off, sit back down, and stay to the end instead of fleeing.
- Walk home replaying it, and write down the one moment you'd change.
