Draw a landmark from life in the busiest public square

“Sitting with a sketchbook in a crowded square makes you feel exposed at first. Then you realize watching the city take shape is the real reward.”

The Recipe

  1. Take a small notebook and pencil to the most active square or pedestrian thoroughfare near you.
  2. Sit facing an interesting facade, fountain, or statue, and sketch its outline for thirty continuous minutes.
  3. Ignore technique: focus on capturing proportions, light, and the people passing in front of it.
