Walk in to a bothy and give the day it takes to reach one

“The walk in is longer than the map swears and the last climb comes when your legs are already spent. Then the shelter appears out of the cloud exactly where the stone said it would, and it is yours for the afternoon.”

The Recipe

  1. Find the nearest bothy or mountain hut you can walk to and back in one day: check it is open, and read the code that keeps them standing.
  2. Leave at first light with more layers and more food than you think you need, and tell one person your route and turnaround time.
  3. Walk in at a pace you could hold all day, not the pace that feels good in the first hour.
  4. When the shelter comes into view, do not rush the last climb: it is where people turn ankles.
  5. Reach it, sign the book, read what the last person wrote, and eat your lunch out of the wind.
  6. Leave the place better than you found it, and pack every scrap of yours out.
  7. Turn for home with enough daylight to spare that a wrong turn could not strand you.
  8. Get down, and feel the flat ground be strange under you.
