Follow a hill ridge from one end to the other

“There is a stretch along the top, a drop on both sides, where you will wish you had someone with you. On the far side you will be glad no one talked you out of it.”

The Recipe

  1. Choose a ridge walk within your ability that has a clear start, a clear finish, and a way down at each end.
  2. Study the whole route the night before so you are not learning it on the hill.
  3. Start early and get the climb up to the ridge done while you are fresh.
  4. Once you are on the top, keep to the path and do not shortcut the exposed parts.
  5. Eat and drink on the move rather than stopping long; the weather up there turns fast.
  6. Get through the narrowest section steadily, without stopping in the middle of it.
  7. Look back along the whole ridge once from the far end, before you drop off it.
  8. Come off by the planned descent, not the tempting steep one.
  9. Reach the valley with light to spare and let your legs shake.
