Ride between three markets in one region in a day
“The connections never line up and you will spend an hour on a bench in a town you did not choose. That hour, watching a place that is performing for no one, turns out to be the best part.”
The Recipe
- The night before, find three markets within a region that all run the same day (a food market, a general one, a flea or farmers' market) and rough out the trains or buses between them.
- Set out to the nearest one first thing, when the traders are still setting up and will talk to you.
- Buy one thing to eat now and one thing to carry, and ask the trader where they would go for lunch.
- Take the slow connection to the second market. Do not fill the gap with your phone: watch the country change through the window.
- At the second, buy nothing at first. Walk the whole thing once before you spend, then go back for the one stall that stuck.
- Get to the third as it winds down, when the prices drop and the traders have time to talk properly.
- Ride home with a bag of things you did not plan to buy, and eat the carried thing on the last train.
