Walk through the whole night and arrive somewhere at dawn

“The walking is not the hard part. Three in the morning, when your body wants to be asleep and the streets have emptied of anyone with a reason to be out, is, and arriving somewhere as it gets light is a reward you cannot get any other way.”

The Recipe

  1. Pick somewhere worth reaching at dawn within a night's walk, a hilltop, the coast, a market that opens before light, taking the first that fits rather than the best.
  2. Sleep in the afternoon first, and eat a proper meal before dark.
  3. Set off in the evening with lights, warm layers and more food than a day walk, having told someone your route.
  4. Walk the evening while people are still about, getting the easy distance done early.
  5. Hold your pace through the dead hours after midnight, when nothing is open and no one is around.
  6. Take something warm from a flask at the low point, somewhere around three or four.
  7. Time the last stretch to reach your place as the sky starts to grey.
  8. Arrive as it gets light, mark that you walked the whole night through, and find the first breakfast or transport going.
