Climb to the highest place you can reach on foot and stay till the light turns
“The climb is longer and less scenic than you pictured, and halfway up you'll think the view won't be worth it. It always is; that's the oldest trick the body plays.”
The Recipe
- Find the highest point you can reach on foot from home: a hill, a headland, a tower open to walkers, a long stair.
- Leave with enough afternoon left to be up top when the light starts to go.
- Take the walking route, not the cable car or the lift, even where one exists.
- Don't stop at the first good view; the top earns more.
- Get to the highest point you can stand on and turn a slow full circle.
- Sit down and stay through the light changing: don't leave the second you arrive.
- Find the whole route home laid out below you and trace it with your eye.
- Come down before it's fully dark, by a different way if there is one.
