Trace a river that now runs under the streets
“You cannot follow a river you cannot see, except the city keeps giving it away, in a dip in the road, a street named for water, a lane that bends for no reason. By the end you are reading a layer hidden in plain sight.”
The Recipe
- Find out whether your city has a river or stream that was built over, and roughly where it once ran.
- Start where it still surfaces, or at the highest point of its old course, and walk its line downhill through the streets.
- Watch for the tells: a sudden dip, a curving road, a watery street name, a low ribbon of green.
- Follow it as far as you can toward where it rejoins open water or the main river.
- At the end, find where it returns to daylight, if it does at all.
