Walk on foot between two landmarks you have only ever seen apart
“Choosing to walk something everyone takes a train for feels faintly absurd for the first hour. Then the ground between the two places becomes real, which it never is from a window.”
The Recipe
- Pick two landmarks on opposite sides of your city that you have only ever reached separately, and plot a walkable line between them.
- Start at the one furthest from home so the day ends closer to your bed.
- Touch the first landmark before you set off: the walk starts there, not at your door.
- Walk the straightest reasonable line between them, taking the streets rather than the parks where you have the choice.
- Do not get on any transport, however tired, until you reach the second one.
- Eat somewhere you pass that you would never have travelled to on purpose.
- Reach the second landmark and sit with it a while before you go home.
- Take the train home that you would once have taken both ways.
