Walk your city's boundary line for a day

“The boundary was drawn for reasons no one alive remembers, so it runs through car parks, along ditches and down the middle of ordinary streets. Following it is the least scenic and most revealing day you can give the place.”

The Recipe

  1. Find the administrative boundary of your city or borough on a map, and pick a day's worth of it with transit at both ends.
  2. Get to your start point on the line first thing.
  3. Follow the boundary as closely as the streets and paths allow, returning to it every time you are forced off.
  4. Note each time the line does something strange, splitting a street, following a ditch, cutting a park in two.
  5. Eat at the halfway point, wherever the line has left you, ready or not.
  6. Hold to the boundary through the dull stretches; the dull stretches are most of what a boundary is.
  7. Reach your end point on the line with daylight to spare.
  8. Take transit home and trace on the map how much of the edge you walked.
