Find where two waters meet and read the line between them

“It sounds like nothing, two rivers and one join. Up close there's a visible seam between them, and you'll spend longer than you meant working out which water is which.”

The Recipe

  1. Find where two waters meet near you: a river taking in a tributary, a canal joining a river, fresh water reaching the tide.
  2. Get to the point of the join and settle where you can see both waters and the meeting itself.
  3. Watch until you can read the seam between them, one siltier or faster or a different colour or temperature, and work out which is which and why.
  4. Follow the line downstream with your eye and see how far the two waters run side by side before they finally mix.
